sometimes it’s the little things

Like a deliveryman telling me I look like a movie star (he shouldn’t be driving with that kind of vision, though. I think the heat was getting to him).

Or taking a few minutes out of my day to find a whole basement room I never knew about in my favorite used bookstore. And getting my toenails painted a coral my grandmother would have loved.

Some days, those are the things you rely on. One of the three classes I am teaching this summer just started and I am excited about it — it’s one of my favorite grad classes to teach: the first class they take on the Nature of Reading. Plus this time it’s a hybrid face to face and online, which either will really work well in the summer or won’t and I will tweak it. I think it should work really well, though. Even though I have way too many students for this — 33 — they all have such wide varieties of experience and interests. We’re all going to learn a lot, that much I can definitely say.

    Hey Dr. D,
I am EMANCIPATED…Today was the last day at school! HOORAY! I love what you have done to your blog page.

Little things are the greatest things in the whole scheme of things…don’t you think?

Like finding a parking spot in a filled lot - even though you are late and expected there to be no spaces left. Or you’re having a bad hair day, yet several people tell you…”You look MARVELOUS!” Or at the end of a very rough school year when you think you hate all the kids and can’t wait for them to leave and you are sure they feel the same way about you - several of them hug you and say, “I’m going to miss you Mrs. Bailey!”

Yep! The little things really matter.

Glad you are enjoying your first summer class and REALLY hope to be in attendance for the one in August. However, we have not gotten any information about the course as of yet. I hope we are not notified at the LAST minute. I really want to take the course, but if the information does not get to me in a timely manner, I will proceed with other plans for the remainder of the summer.

I want my page to look like yours. How did you do that. I want characters that move and blink (SMILE), and a calendar and all that good stuff. HELP!

Hope to see and work with you soon.

Did I tell you; I ended up doing what you do - I had to check my students’ blogpages. I was truly able to put myself in your shoes. It was great to see the kid so enthusiastic. We had to participate in MEDIA BLAST (please forgive me if I told you this before) wherein teachers lead a project using one of the “new literacies.” I chose BLOGGING because, as usual, we received the mandate at the last minute. Next year, though, I want to do a PODCAST or COMIC LIFE project with my classes.

It was a great way to finish out the year. Taking your class, prepared me for this project. FABULOUS!

I will definitely check those out — sorry I am late getting back to you. Talk to Koree about the status of the class — and I love that you used blogging with your students and that they loved doing it. All of the projects at the Media Blast were so exciting and innovative — the teachers and students really impressed me.

Were you at my school? Did you see the presentations?
